Answering Your Questions About Plasma Skin Tightening

There are countless anti-aging skincare treatments on the market today, so people have a mind-boggling number of options to choose from. It comes as no surprise, then, that many people are getting increasingly attracted to more modern and non-surgical skin care options. Gone are the days of needles and scalpels, and in their place now are innovative and entirely non-invasive new treatments.

In this article, we’re going to talk about plasma skin tightening, a highly effective skin tightening procedure that’s been gaining popularity in the world of beauty and aesthetics. Here, you’ll learn all about plasma skin tightening and what you can expect from this treatment.

How Does Plasma Skin Tightening Work?

Plasma skin tightening involves the use of a Plasma Pen to treat aging skin. Through the process of ionization, this pen-like device can generate an electric charge that is applied to the epidermis, the uppermost layer of skin. The thermal stress created from this electric charge then produces “micro-injuries” in the targeted area.

These micro-injuries contract and tighten the skin, but also stimulate the body’s natural healing response. This leads to the stimulation of collagen and elastin production. Collagen and elastin are the two most important proteins in the body when it comes to the health, strength, and appearance of your skin.

Over a short period, the skin will work to repair itself, leading to the remodeling of the treated area. Your skin will then start to look smoother and tighter, and your skin tone and complexion will be more even. Furthermore, there will be a noticeable reduction in the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, scarring, and pigmentation.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

This treatment is designed for use on the face and can be applied to most areas. This includes the forehead, crow’s feet, above and below the eyes, along the nasolabial folds, cheeks, jaw, jowls, chin, neck and decolletage, and the sides of the nose.

What Can You Expect During Your Treatment?

During your session, the plasma pen will not be touching you directly. Instead, it will be held approximately 1 mm above the surface of your skin. Small electrical charges will be applied to the area, resulting in tiny holes or dots on the surface of your skin. Don’t be scared – these are harmless! In fact, these micro-injuries make all the magic happen.

Depending on the areas being treated, the procedure can take between 30 and 60 minutes to complete. Afterward, a cooling gel will be applied to the area to reduce any tingling or burning sensations.

The skin tightening procedure can be moderately uncomfortable, though this will vary from person to person. If you have a particularly low pain threshold or simply want to minimize any possible discomfort, your practitioner should have a topical numbing cream on hand to help numb the area before it is treated.

What Is the Downtime After Treatment?

Because this procedure is non-surgical, non-invasive, and generally safe to use, there is no downtime needed after the treatment. For the most part, you can go about your day as normal after a session. However, there are some side effects and aftercare tips to keep in mind. These include:

Carbon Crusts

You will experience minor scabbing on the treated area, known as carbon crusts. Do not try to pick or rub these off your skin. After 5-10 days, they will slough off on their own, and trying to remove them yourself could simply lead to scarring and infection.

Sunburn-Like Sensation

You may experience a sensation quite similar to a sunburn directly after treatment. This is normal and should fade within the first 24 hours, but if you feel any discomfort, you can take anti-inflammatory meds like Ibuprofen to counteract it.

Sensitive Skin

Your post-procedure skin will be healing itself over the coming days and weeks and will be very sensitive. Make sure to wear sunscreen with a high SPF and avoid direct exposure to the sun for the first few weeks. You should also avoid self-tanning, as it can cause hyperpigmentation.

You will also need to clean the area twice a day with mild soap or skincare products. Your practitioner will give you a list of aftercare guidelines. Be sure to follow them closely to ensure the best results.
